Publicity Intern, Grand Central Publishing

Hachette Book Group is seeking a motivated intern to join the Publicity team at Grand Central Publishing. This is an exciting opportunity for a student interested in a career in publicity and book publishing to gain hands-on experience and insight into how campaigns are developed and executed. Working closely with members of the publicity department, with opportunities for exposure to other areas of the business, you’ll contribute to meaningful projects that support both individual titles and broader seasonal initiatives.

 

Logistics:

  • Program Dates: Approx. Feb. 2 – April 27, 2026 
  • Weekly schedule:  16 hours per week 
  • Location: New York office, with flexibility for hybrid.  
  • Company laptop will be provided for the duration of the internship.  
  • Eligible for college credit. 

 

Who you are: 

  • Current student (degree or certificate program), with a strong interest in publishing and learning more about publicity functions 
  • A clear, confident communicator with strong writing and interpersonal skills 
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment 
  • A proactive, resourceful self-starter who’s eager to learn and take ownership of projects 
  • A collaborative team player with a positive attitude and curiosity about how publicity works 
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Office and Google Drive; familiarity with media research tools (MuckRack, Podchaser, etc.) is a plus 

 

Key responsibilities and learning opportunities include:

  • Learning the nuts and bolts of media outreach, from drafting press materials (press releases, galley letters, pitch emails, etc.) to assisting in the coordination and distribution of galleys, review copies, and other campaign assets.
  • Conducting targeted research to identify relevant journalists, podcasts, Substacks and media outlets for both nonfiction (sports, health & wellness, pop culture, history, politics) and fiction (mystery/thriller, romance, literary fiction) titles. Develop an understanding of how to tailor outreach based on audience and genre.
  • Gain exposure to publicity databases and contact list management tools. Depending on your interests and experience, you may have the opportunity to sit in on select meetings with authors and media contacts to observe how publicity relationships are built and maintained.
  • Join weekly publicity meetings and participate in discussions such campaign brainstorming sessions.
  • Depending on department needs, support limited media outreach, such as pitching local journalists for author tour coverage or contacting niche media outlets.
  • Perform general administrative tasks that are essential to any marketing or publicity role, including organizing mailings, distributing media coverage, and tracking bestseller lists.

The compensation for this position is $16.50/hour. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
