What You Will Do

As a Founding Senior AI / ML Engineer at Avy, you will play a central role in bringing our product vision to life and have exceptional prospects for growth in a fast-paced environment. This is a hands-on role where you will have the chance to wear multiple hats and build high-quality software that bridges the gap between humans and computers. Your work will involve:

• Foundational Development: Establish the core of Avy's AI and machine learning systems, as the product scales to include local, on-device and privacy-sensitive processing combined with judicious use of cloud-hosted services operated by us and others.
• Innovative Implementation: Bring your ideas to life in a dynamic team setting, embracing various roles in the early stages.
• Guide the development of new datasets for model training and improvement; this could include generating synthetic data, designing a strategy for remotely collected telemetry, and implementing privacy-preserving techniques.
• Leverage both proprietary and open source software, models, and datasets, potentially with modification or fine-tuning
• System Enhancement: Fine-tune our search, retrieval, and knowledge graph systems for optimal performance.
• Technological Exploration: Stay abreast of the latest advancements in AI and ML, assessing their applicability to our products and future directions.

Skills You Will Need

• Intellectual curiosity combined with a pragmatic, results-driven approach.
• Ability to select appropriate technological solutions, balancing innovation with practicality.
• Strong communication skills, capable of collaborating with a diverse team whose strengths are in engineering, product, design, and business, not only AI or math.
• Knowledge of and experience selecting and working with various AI and ML model architectures, especially for NLP, image, and audio processing. Able to explain how a Transformer model works.
• Experience with LLMs, both open-weight and commercial
• Experience improving models running in production settings, using data, telemetry, and feedback.
• Skilled in common data science programming with languages like Python

Ideal Candidate Skills

• Experience fine-tuning open-weight LLMs and other models
• Knowledge of typed languages (C, C++, Swift, Go)
• Familiarity with knowledge graphs, search, and information retrieval.
• An advanced degree in computer science, math, physics, statistics, neuroscience, data science, or other technical fields is desired but not required
