SUMMARY: The Water/Wastewater Operator is skilled in the operations and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment and in laboratory testing of same.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:

The following duties and responsibilities are not meant to be all inclusive and may be adjusted to meet business needs.

  • Takes lift station readings, inspects floats and pump operation, alternates pumps to assure switching over and maintains clean and secure area. Inspects, cleans and maintains the wastewater collection system
  • Takes daily readings of water pumped and chemicals used, checks water tower pressure daily, tests for proper water quality, takes monthly bacteria and fluoride tests and reports results of these tests to the Water/Wastewater Manager by the tenth of the of each month. Inspects, cleans and maintains the water mains, valves and hydrants
  • At the Wastewater Station ponds, the operator must walk the berm to ensure soundness, inspects water in primary and secondary ponds to determine state of water and checks for damage from deep-rooted plants, rodents or another invasion and treats or removes as needed. Inspects liner of pond for any breaches, oil or odd odor and repairs or fixes as necessary. Inspects aeration and performs any maintenance required. Keeps berm mowed and fence line clean and removes all debris from ponds
  • Performs routine maintenance on water and wastewater equipment and maintains written records on same on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual basis
  • Schedules routine and special maintenance for all vehicles and mowers and performs those tasks that do not require specialized expertise
  • Performs minor electrical tasks that do not require a licensed electrician
  • Responds to any water or wastewater complaints and reports same to department manager
  • Assists in the maintenance of records for water and wastewater
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong computer skills Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work well within the existing team and government structure
  • Sensitive to Native American Culture
  • Pass drug screen (UA) and a criminal background check
  • Valid driver’s license and proof of insurability

Preferred

  • Associate's degree in science (AAS) degree in Water /Wastewater
  • Commercial Driver’s license (CDL)
  • Experience with SCADA systems

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:*

  • Must have the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Must have ability to operate water and wastewater equipment, tools, and trucks
  • Must be able to lift and carry chemicals and tools, shovel snow and dig, mobe and demobe from jobs.
  • Must be able to walk, stand or sit for long periods throughout the day
  • Must be able to push, pull and grasp objects routinely
  • Must be able to bend and crouch frequently
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions

REQUIRED TRAINING:

  • Effectively Handling Harassment training
  • Training as available for Class A license
  • Any position-related training as determined by department manager

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed in indoors and outdoors and may include exposure to extreme weather conditions
  • Work is regularly performed in confined spaces
