Job Description

Library Clerk

Salary: $15.61/hr. To provide general clerical support to the Circulation area of the Library; and to provide effective and efficient public service assistance to the public.

General supervision is provided by the Senior Library Assistant.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • All behaviors comply with the Code of Conduct & Rules of Behavior outlined in the General Government Policies and Procedures Manual.
  • Assist library patrons at circulation desk; check in or check out library material; issue library cards.
  • Collect library fees; issue receipts; enter data into the computer; count money collected and ensure that money is properly documented.
  • Process requests for library cards including accepting applications, verifying patron information, and entering data into the computer.
  • Register and assist patrons at the public access computer workstations.
  • Maintain a log of library statistics.
  • Receive, sort, distribute newspapers and periodicals.
  • Maintain subscription records to ensure continuity of resources. Notify supervisor of late periodicals.
  • Maintain and update Meeting Room Calendar.
  • File library card applications.
  • Work as a cooperative and supportive member of the library team.
  • Provide the best possible customer service to the public.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contact patrons by phone or mail when library material is overdue; prepare overdue search forms; clear patron records when matter is resolved.
  • Shelve returned audio-visual material.
  • Check shelves for overdue, lost and problem items.
  • Answer incoming telephone calls; respond to and direct inquiries.
  • Enter and verify a variety of data into the computer system.
  • Assist in the closing procedures of the library.
  • Route damaged items to appropriate Librarian or Technical staff.
  • Assist in maintaining the photocopier, including adding paper and reporting maintenance problems to supervisor.
  • Assist patrons with use of photocopier.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

Education : High School Diploma or GED.

Experience : Some library experience is preferred. Type 30 wpm.

Licenses and Certificates : Possession of a valid driver's license.

Work Schedule : Must be able to work 19 hours a week: Tuesdays and Thursdays 3PM-8PM Fridays 12PM-6PM & Saturdays 9AM-12PM.

Required Testing (only if interviewed):

  • Library Department will conduct a math/cash handling test.
  • HR will conduct: Typing and Customer Service

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

Full Time Employees: The City of Mesquite offers the Zero Premium, Employee Only Benefits under the following plans: High Deductible Medical Plan, HMO Dental Plan, Vision Plan, and Life Insurance. The City offers three dental plan options: a managed plan (DHMO), an indemnity plan (DPPO), an enhanced indemnity plan (DPPO Enhanced). Coverage is available to all full-time employees at group rates. The City offers free Vision Insurance to all employees. Dependents can be added for an additional fee. Basic Group Life Insurance protection is provided to eligible full-time employees in the amount of two times the annual salary as recorded at the beginning of each year. The following voluntary benefits are available to full-time employees: Supplemental Life, AD&D Insurance, Cancer Insurance and Long-Term Disability Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS): All employees appointed to positions designated to work 1,000 hours or more per year must participate in the TMRS. TMRS is a qualified tax-deferred retirement plan under Section 401 of the IRS. Seven (7) percent of gross earnings are deducted each payroll as a pre-tax deduction and deposited into the member account. When an employee becomes vested and retires, the City provides 2-to-1 matching contributions. Other benefits include Social Security, Tax Saver Program (Section 125 Flexible Spending Account), Deferred Compensation Plans, Direct Deposit, Paid Holidays, Paid Vacation, Sick Leave and Personal Leave.
