Executive / Managing Director

NBTA

The National Board of Trial Advocacy (NBTA) is a non-profit organization that helps consumers locate and hire skilled legal representation by certifying highly-qualified attorneys in specialized areas of the law.

The Mission

Our Executive Director must advance and report on measurable results in each of our four core strategic objectives:

1) Grow and Invigorate Membership – grow and engage our membership by:

  • raising awareness of the advantages of our eight current areas of board certification and increasing the number of highly-qualified attorneys who sit for our certifications; and 

  • building additional specialized areas of certifications to allow even more highly-qualified attorneys to become members.

  • enhancing the member experience through developing continued education, attorney resources, and opportunities for engagement with the organization.

2) Deepen Partnerships – deepen our partnerships by:

  • increasing reach and frequency of communication and partnership opportunities with the American Bar Association and state accreditation authorities; and

  • collaborating to build new and improved joint ventures with professional and advocacy groups aligned with our current and roadmap certification areas.

3) Strengthen Financials – strengthen our financials by:

  • adding visibility and clarity around profit and loss centers while developing multi-year pro formas for strategic planning and accountability; and

  • pioneering new revenue opportunities by expanding our membership base and offering new value-add services for existing members.

4) Evolve Organization – evolve our organization by:

  • improving visibility and improving current systems and processes to increase opportunities for innovation and efficiencies; and

  • evolving workflow and communications to improve agility and increase cross-functional work at the board and staff levels. 

The Leader

Our Executive Director must have the proven skills and experience needed to balance four critical relationships to advance our objectives:

  • Attorney Members – more than 1500 attorney members who have passed a rigorous, multi-part examination to become NBTA board certified attorneys.

  • Board of Directors – a diverse and highly-engaged national board made up of leading trial lawyers, judges, and academics from around the country.

  • Professional Staff – a small group of highly-experienced and deeply-committed veteran staff (average team member has 15+ years with NBTA).

  • Strategic Partners – a core group includes the American Bar Association (ABA), state-certifying agencies, advocacy organizations, and law schools.

Profile of the Ideal Candidate

  • 5-7 years of senior leadership experience at an organization of comparable size, scope, and financial complexity
  • Knowledge of or experience in the processes of certification, specialization, and/or accreditation
  • Understanding of the legal profession preferred but not required
  • Bachelor’s degree required

Compensation and Benefits

  • $85,000 - $100,000, annually, based on experience, plus benefits
