ELEVATOR MECHANIC (T229637)

To perform preventive maintenance and repairs on designated passenger and freight elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters and moving sidewalks according to schedule and in accordance with industry safety practices. To troubleshoot defective equipment, make repairs and respond promptly to service and call back requests. To perform all duties in accordance with established protocols and industry safety standards. To gather data and submit written reports. To guide, train and oversee the work of the elevator mechanic assistants. To assist other team members with daily work and special projects. To use assigned communication device to read and respond to texts, emails and service requests in a timely manner. May be asked to complete the NAEC CETTM training program based on department need. Essential Job Functions
  • Performs routine cleaning on designated elevators and equipment rooms, including blowing out generators, motors, selectors and controllers, wiping down all above equipment; cleaning hoistway doors, tracks, sills, elevator cars and related equipment.
  • Paints elevator machine rooms, equipment, car tops and pits as needed.
  • Maintains a clean and organized worksite, tools and inventory.
  • Completes scheduled and detailed maintenance inspections, makes necessary adjustments, parts replacement and repairs.
  • Performs major repairs and required safety tests according to code.
  • Performs scheduled and minor repairs to equipment room electrical systems (replacing lights, cleaning contacts, replacing coils, fuses, motors, brushes and other components).
  • Performs scheduled and minor repairs to elevator and hoistway electrical systems (replacing lights, push buttons, covers, switches, electric eyes, door operator motors, wiring, gongs/bells, indicator sockets, safety edge cords).
  • Performs scheduled maintenance and minor repairs to elevator and hoistway mechanical systems (replacing door rollers and gibs, release rollers and assemblies, defective belts and cables, adjusting doors, repairing/replacing door closure assemblies, adjusting leveling apparatus, inspecting cables).
  • Responds to all calls and breakdowns of assigned elevators promptly (maximum response time of one hour) and handles all emergency calls.
  • Guides, trains, and oversees the work of Elevator Mechanic Assistant(s).
  • Assists other department personnel with more extensive repairs.
  • Gathers data and submits written reports.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with established protocols and industry safety standards.
  • Actively participates in ongoing department training and pursues specialized training and certifications.
  • Uses assigned communication device to read and respond to texts, emails and service requests in a timely manner.
  • Interacts with customers, visitors, students, staff and others in a friendly, respectful, helpful and professional manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to perform basic electrical and mechanical work Ability to read basic electrical and mechanical drawings Ability to learn, practice and adhere to safety standards Ability to solve problems and troubleshoot issues Ability to understand general arithmetic Ability to perceive and distinguish color‑coded wiring components Written and verbal communication skills Ability to read, write and comprehend written and oral instruction Ability to successfully complete any required training courses and remain current Ability to maintain normal attention spans, with intermittent periods of high concentration Ability to train others Ability to work independently and as part of a team Must be self‑directed/self‑motivated Starting Hourly Rate $32.25 – $48.42 (commensurate with experience & qualifications) Work Schedule Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (subject to change to meet the needs of the University). Qualifications Associate’s degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may substitute for education requirement. Licenses / Certifications / Registrations Currently licensed with an Elevator Mechanic’s License by the Alabama Department of Labor required. Driving Requirement Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession of a valid driver’s license issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR). Physical Requirements Possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without mechanical devices, to safely perform duties and responsibilities of this position: Perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, and walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus. Lifting and carrying a minimum of fifty (50) pounds. Ability to climb stairs, ladders and scaffolding, and work at heights above thirty (30) feet. Ability to work in confined spaces.
