SUMMARY

Family Service League is seeking a f ull-time Advocate for a homeless shelter in Brentwood. The Advocate will report to the Evening Supervisor and be responsible for ensuring the safety of families and children, enforcing shelter rules, completing intake consent forms, conducting curfew check, turning over units for new clients as clients are periodically discharged from the shelter. The Advocate will ultimately assist clients in achieving self-sufficiency through advocacy, counseling, and resource referrals.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• The Advocate will perform intakes for new clients upon arrival at the shelter.
• Provide ongoing support and counseling for clients in reaching their goals.
• The Advocate will establish and maintain positive working relationships with others.
• Negotiate conflict resolution and crisis intervention between clients if the occasion arises.
• Conduct regular perimeter checks for safety.
• The Advocate will issue violations for the breaking of rules.
• Address any issues of safety in the unit and remove any dangerous items.
• Provide conflict resolution strategies.
• Promote onsite services to clients.
• The Advocate will oversee and document clients while they self-administer medication.
• Conduct routine bathroom checks.
• Report and document all incidents with detail and accuracy.
• Transport clients as needed.
• All other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree preferred.

1 year of experience in human services preferred.

Prior experience working with the homeless population preferred.

Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills required.

The ability to work as part of a team required.

Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office required.

Valid and clean New York State Driver’s License required.

Flexibility to work weekends required.

Flexibility to work at different sites is preferred.
